The Kirin ‘Big in Japan’ 2011 cultural exchange program allows the artists to display their talents to both a broader Australian and international audience focusing the limelight on modern Japanese expressionism.

Kirin ‘Big in Japan’ Sydney will take place on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 November 2020 at the Paddington Town Hall, which will see this iconic Sydney space be converted into a multidisciplinary performance space.

Returning to Thousand Pound Bend in Melbourne Kirin ‘Big in Japan’ talent will be showcased in the dynamic gallery come cinema hybrid space on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 November 2020

The unique Kirin ‘Big in Japan’ concept lives online year round through the Kirin ‘Big In Japan’ blog www.biginjapan.com.au. Contributed to by Sydney writer Amelia Groom, the blog provides insight into the dangerously talented performers who have been selected to tour Sydney and Melbourne in November 2011 and a year round barometer of what’s making underground Japanese waves in local contemporary art.

2011 Kirin ‘Big in Japan’ Sydney and Melbourne artist line up:

Fuyuki Yamakawa is an ‘avant garde khoomei singer’ and performance/installation artist who works with bare light bulbs, yogic breath, medical equipment, modified musical instruments and the beat of his heart. During his performances he controls his breath and the velocity of his heartbeat and for his climax he momentarily stops his heart all together creating a terrifying sense of suspended time.

Yuko Kaseki is a freelance dancer and choreographer. Her works are based on merging Butoh and western contemporary dance technique to create concise and precise moving theatre. Her performances follow the way of a desperate existence, exposing tragic comedy and revealing a kaleidoscope of stories.

Kyozin Yueni Dekai meaning “we are big because we are giants" is an Oksaka based duo (drummer and guitarist) with the guitarist playing on stilts. Their music style is described as a simple contemporary configuration, original in style.
