The Waverly Bonsai Club

The Waverly Bonsai Club is an enthusiastic group of friendly people ranging from beginners to those with many years of experience. And in age from a few primary school children to a few oldies in their eighties. The club meets on the third Tuesday of every month at St John’s Uniting Church Hall, Virginia St, Mount Waverley, Vic. 3149 (Melways Ref : 70 C1) starting 8:00pm. More information and our newsletters can be obtained on-line via http://home.vicnet.net.au/~bonsaiau/. Visitors are welcome.

The club is very active promoting bonsai and has been involved in quite a number of diverse activities. This includes running hands-on classes to start primary school children off with their own bonsai. And showing bonsai in a shopping centre during Seniors week. For the last two years the club has put on an invited display in the Japanese gardens in the Melbourne zoo which has attracted quite a bit of attention over the Father’s day weekend.

So our club was delighted when we were invited to display some of our members trees at the annual Japanese Festival in Boxhill. This provided us both with an opportunity to show our trees to an interested audience and for us to find out more about the Japanese culture at the same time. The music, singing and dancing and the stylised fighting on stage downstairs were fascinating. The origami and Japanese chess classes upstairs were very well attended. The food to follow it up was diverse and enjoyable.

The layout of the show was such that the Ikebana were displayed right next door to the bonsai. So appropriate !  There was a steady stream of interested visitors admiring and enquiring about bonsai. All our members who attended the show thoroughly enjoyed it and hope to that this is the start of a rewarding collaboration.

For those who would like to see more bonsai, our annual show will be 14th-15th August, 2010, Mt Waverley Community Centre, Corner of Stephensons Rd and Miller Cresent, Mt Waverley (Melways Ref 70 E1).
