The aim of the annual Australia-Japan Relations Essay Contest is to encourage and develop a better understanding of Japan and Australia-Japan relations amongst Australian students.
Entry qualifications:
The contest is open to students enrolled in Australian secondary schols, both public and private, including seventh year primary schools in QLD, SA, WA and NT.
Essay topics:
Junior A Division (Years 7-8)
A group of Japanese junior high school students is visiting your school on a school excursion during the summer holidays. You are asked to explain one thing that makes Australians proud. In return, you ask the Japanese students to explain one thing that makes Japanese people proud. What does each group say?
(700-1000 words)
Junior B Division (Years 9-10)
Currently there are 14 World Heritage sites located in Japan. Of these, 11 are cultural properties and 3 are natural properties. If you were a representative of Japan, what would you nominate as the next World Heritage site and why?
(1100-1400 words)
Senior Division (Years 11-12)
Japan is well known for its high population density, particularly in urban areas. What issues do you think Japanese people face because of this and what measures are being taken to overcome them? Australia is currently experiencing an increase in population. How can Australia learn from Japan’s experiences with high population density?
(1500-1800 words)
Prizes:
The first place winner in Juinor B and Senior Divisions will win a RETURN AIR TICKET* TO JAPAN, courtesy of Japan Airlines. In addition, the winners will be provided with a 7-day Japan Rail Pass (Ordinary Class) and 3 nights accommodation at the Holiday Inn Kyoto (conditions apply, subject to availability), courtesy of JTB Australia Pty Ltd.
The first place winner in the Junior A Division will receive $300 worth of books. The School of the Year will be awarded to the school with the highest amount of top quality essays. Prize and prize conditions are not negotiable, transferable or exchangeable.
*The definition of ‘return ticket’ is international flights between Sydney or Brisbane to Tokyo only. The cost of domestic airfares, airport taxes, and fuel surcharges are the responsibilities of the prize winner.
