Kirin Megumi Stories Vol. 28 ASAKUSA: Japanese cuisine the locals love

Upon entering Asakusa you will feel as if you've stepped back in time as you are greeted with the familiar, homely sight of the small Japanese restaurant.

Located in Malvern East, Asakusa is an authentic Japanese restaurant opened in 2005 by a Chinese owner, Lucy. Since its opening this popular restaurant has received high recommendations from many customers, even receiving the Australian Achiever Awards Highly Recommended award.

The chef, Steven, is a Chinese-Malaysian with 7 years experience working as a chef in Japan.

Offering around 100 different varieties of ingredients, including fresh fish picked daily, Asakusa is sure to satisfy all tastes; meat lovers, seafood enthusiasts and vegetarians alike.

Now, let's introduce the following four items that have been chosen off the extensive menu and can be enjoyed together with "Kirin Megumi".

Japanese-style Marinated Lamb and Grilled Mayonaise Oysters

Firstly, Asakusa's original menu item, Japanese-style Marinated Lamb, consists of succulent lamb chops marinated in a blend of soy sauce, mirin and sake and then grilled.

Paired with this is one of the most popular items on the menu, Grilled Mayonnaise Oysters. Large, fresh oysters are generously coated in mayonnaise and grilled, which perfectly complements the savoury aroma and brings out the juiciness of the lamb.

Sashimi Tasting Plate (Small)

Three varieties of fresh fish are handpicked by the chef daily and served accordingly.

On this day we enjoyed the distinctly different flavours of tuna, salmon and flounder.

Grilled Miso Ainame

Lastly, the Grilled Miso Ainame (Japanese rock trout) consists of plump fish fillets coated in white miso and grilled to perfection. After one bite, the succulent fillets melt in your mouth and the sweet taste of miso mingles with the moderate flavour of the fish to create a taste sensation.

"'Kirin Megumi' is a beer that can be enjoyed with both meat and raw food such as sashimi." says the owner, Lucy. "It brings out the juiciness and flavour of meat and fish without feeling too heavy, and also allows you to enjoy the subtle tastes of raw food, such as sashimi."

Just as the poster on the wall says,「道」, the character for path or way highlights Lucy's strong determination to continue along the path and do justice to traditional Japanese cuisine.

The menu is full of carefully selected ingredients designed to create traditional Japanese cuisine that you will never get tired of eating.

It is a restaurant that the locals come back to time and time again.

"At Asakusa we offer a large variety of traditional, handmade Japanese dishes, such as gyoza. All dishes are served with a smile, so please come and see for yourself."
